A Sneak Peak!!

As many of you may know I am writing a book about my ggg grandmother Anna who was a true pioneer woman.
I have finally gotten chapter 18 almost completed. While I was working on it tonight I thought I would share a small exerpt with you!

On May first Lod hitched up the buggy for the trip to see Nancy in Whiteside County.
It was a wonderful day for a trip in the buggy! The sun was shining and a soft breeze was rippling the long green prairie grass. The prairie phlox were in bloom and Anna could smell the sweet scent of the wild Lilac bushes. She could hear the meadow larks singing in the trees. She was so happy that she would soon see Nancy again and her husband Earl.
She had worn her newest dress, a soft pink calico with tiny white flowers and her new pink silk poke bonnet that J. W. and Mary had given her for Christmas.

They traveled the new dirt road and it was so much smoother than driving over wild prairie land.
In Princeton they stopped at the local hotel to have some lunch.
They ate fried chicken and potato pancakes that had fresh Spring onions in them. Anna and Lod both poured home made maple syrup over the potato pancakes.
What a treat that was!

Vintage Quilt Top- needs to go!

I discovered this quilt top when we moved into my husband's grandparents house 10 years ago.
It was made by my husband's grandmother. She passed away in 1974 so it is at least 38 years old.
The pattern has 6 point stars and it looks like to me that it is a scrap quilt form 1930's-1940's fabrics.
I had planned on finishing it but after 10 years I have to admit I will never do that.
It is unfinished but what is done is 80" wide x 84" long. A few of the solid green blocks have some light discoloration- it may be permanent but may not- a good washing may cure that.
I have not done so as I do not have the specila sopa neede to wash it in.

I love how this turned out- the base is a tin can painted a reddish brown, the pincushion is coffee dyed muslin, and the bird is made from a repro cream and soft red calico- there is a label on the can that says "Pinkeep".

Cora Aber Sampler CupboardTuck Cora Aber was born in 1869 in Mc Donough County Illinois. She lived on the open prairie until she was 20 years old when she traveled by covered wagon to Indian Territory , Oklahoma. She met and married Henry McLish a half blood Chicasaw Indian.
After having 5 children and several grandchildren she passed away in Oklahoma in 1921.
This sampler is a tribute to her and is stitched as authentically as I could including the not so perfect border on the right hand side- much as a 10 year old would have stitched it.

Sarah Jones Sampler Pillow
Sarah Jones was born in 1838 and lived all of her life on the prairie country.
She married in Yorktown, Illinois and gave birth to 4 children- one of them died in infancy.
In her later years she owned and operated her own sawmill
Sarah passed away in 1931 in the small prairie town of Tampico, IL.
The pillow is 9 1/2 " w x 9 1/2" h

Looking Back and Moving Forward

2011 was filled with many hardships for me- mostly in the form of serious medical problems for my family and myself. It also was filled with joy that my husband and son are still alive and doing fairly well. I was afflicted with some type of arthritic, rheumatic disorder that has yet to be properly diagnosed. It has been going on since September - I can endure the pain but it's constant presence is annoying. I hope that in 2012 they will finally diagnose it and treat it properly.
I have resolved to be more efficient, to live greener and eat healthier, and possibly to make some other major changes on my life.
I am not usually very good at keeping New Year's resolutions but maybe this will be the year that I do- if you made some I hope that you can keep yours too!

I hope you all have had a day filled with peace and happiness and that it was spent with loved ones and freinds.
As many of you know this past June my 38 year old son had a major heart attack and for the past three months my husband has been extremely ill and got a pacemaker just 3 weeks ago.
Being able to sit down our table with both of them today and enjoy a wonderful Christmas feast was the greatest blessing I could have asked for.

After supper hubby, Molly and I went outside and burned leaves in the driveway. Ir was so relaxing. Hubby is sitting next to the fire but he didn't show up and poor little Molly's eyes are gloeing and I could not edit them! Even thogh my father had his own darkroom many, many years ago a photographer I am not!

Today- the scope and the doctor that did it were quick and it is good news- the doctor did not see any cancer- just a lot of thick mucous plugs that my husband can not cough up. When they lay there in the lung they get infected and the pnuemonia develops. He washed out his right lung and when hubby is better he will start on breathing treatments to help keep the plugs from forming. Hubby is now at home- yippee!!

We are needing to have our house appraised and the back bathroom vanity is horrible- it has a wood grained contact paper veneer on it- I am on the process of painting it black but it isn't easy over the contact paper- hopefully it will look better when I am finished- the whole batroom will be re done- as economically as possibel and still look good- I hope!

Making Soap Tonight

After supper I decided to make a new batch of soap. This is scented in Blackberry Sage ( a scent I love!!)

The top photo shows it as it just starting to thicken- the second photo is when it has thickened to pour stage.

The scope revealed a very small polyp that they removed but no bleeding- so.. they think the bleeding is in the small intestine- they decided to not have him swallow the camera that would travel the 23 feet of small intestines as they think the bleeding is very light and the only way to fix it is to remove the area that is bleeding. So he will have frequent blood draws to check his hemoglobin- if he starts needing frequent transfusions then they will reconsider using the camera.
Hubby is now home. I want to thank all of you for all of your concern and prayers.

Pnuemonia, Anemia, Transfusion, Colon Prep- Oh My!!

The plan was to have new things to post on here but.. hubby ended up in the ER last Saturday afternoon and was admitted. He had fluid in his lungs and on Sunday they found pnuemonia, his anemia keeps getting worse so today he had a plasma transfusion and tonight he will get a colon prep and have a colonoscopy tomorrow. He is tired of the hospital stays and I am so ready to find out where he is bleeding from and get him well!!

Thanks to everyone for their prayers.
He has no bleeding in the brain or stomach so that is good news. They still don't know where the bleeding is and his kidney function is still worsening but he will be seen by a kidney specialist later this week. It is amazing but he still looks healthy!

My Hubby is Very Sick

A few weeks ago my husband started having some mild stomach pain and some nausea.
After 5 Dr. office visits and an ER visit he was admitted to the hospital yesterday.
He takes a blood thinner and they now think he may be bleeding in his stomach and possibly his brain. His kidney function is also deteriorating. A ct scan of his head was done last night but I do not know the results yet. They are going to do an ultrasound of his kidneys today and also a scope to his stomach.
Please keep us in your prayers.

I am writing a book about Anna...

my ggg grandmother Anna that is. As many of you know I have done a lot of geneaology research and this pioneer grandmother has fascinated me the most. She was born in olde Virginia to families that were among the earliest settler's there. She bore many children and endured many hardships and when she was in her 70's she traveled by covered wagon to live in Indian Territory. I guess this book will be considered historical fiction as I have accurate dates of events but of course not being there I had to try to fill in the details so that will be the fictional part. The picture shows how I want the cover to look but.. I have discovered that having a book published is not as easy as I though it would be so the cover may change by the time it is published.

I am currently on chapter 13 and have no idea how many more chapters there will be.

I am hoping to have it finished soon as I think this book would make a great Christmas present for those that love the pioneer/ priairie look and lifestyle and enjoys reading about that era.

I don't have a lot of quilts in my house but I treasure each one that I do have!
I am on way out the door so the photos were taken in a hurry- but I think you can see the designs well.

This is my first and only quilt that I have made!

The next two quilts are quilts that my Aunt Janice made and gave to me.

The next two photos are unfinished quilt tops that my husband's grandmother made- I found them 9 years ago and intended to finish them- you know how that goes!!

1889 Summer Sampler

This will be a new pattern on Pilgrims and Pioneers Stitches very soon.

It can be made into a square or rectangular pinkeep or attached to the top of a round box. I will not cover the sides of the next round box with fabric as now that my lid is on it won't come off- painting it would work better. Live and learn. I used floss that matched the fabric but it can easily change to a color that will suit your needs.

I love the old prairie look of this one! It's stitching is done with dark gray, dark brown and, moss green floss. The design of the old cabin and trees with the quilt motifs is very early look!The rag stuffing makes it prim and lumpy and it is heavily coffee dyed- darker and blotchier than it shows. It is backed with old drab brown wool and measures 5"x 5".

Old Blue Prairie Sewing Roll

This is such an early looking piece- just like it was made by a pioneer woman on the prairie.
The overall dimensions are 13" high x 7" wide-the main stitched piece is 10" x 4 1/2 " wide.
it is stitched on a piece of tattered old linen wit a bird and rabbits at the top and row of blue and tan quilt motifs on the left side. The scrap of linen band at the top says with my needle- it is dated 1827, The entire piece is heavily coffee dyed and baked to prim perfection. There is a layer of batting between the front and back so it will hold many needles and pins and many skiens of floos can be rolled up inside. The cream colored ribbon closure has been coffe dued also and could be replaced with coffee dyed kitchen string.
The piece is functional as a sewing roll but can also be a hanging sampler or it also looks great laying in an olde trencher. ( The blue fabric is a medium blue and not quire as dark as shown)28.00 plus 3.00 shipping
